SAL Violins
John Soloninka
By profession, I am a medical technology executive and serial entrepreneur. As a youth, my father taught me wood working and I later trained in Engineering Physics and aerodynamics. My passion for acoustics, vibration and woodworking unexpectedly laid the groundwork for violin making.
From a young age I also learned violin, studying with a student of the great Eugene Ysaye, and two concert masters of the Toronto Symphony.
I later discovered "Strad Magazine" and learned the rich history, craft and physics of violins...and realized "I can build these!". I studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design, with Phil Davis (a Toronto Luthier) and read copious texts and papers, attended conferences. It has become my "religion and tradition".
Violin Making - "Luthierie"
My workshop is in my home, fully equipped with all tools and supplies.
My goal in making is to blend the latest scientific, traditional and artistic knowledge to craft high-quality, beautiful instruments that have power, projection and complexity.
Currently, I make instruments based on actual historical examples where I have loved their sound.
